Griffith Observatory

Griffith Observatory! Made famous in "Rebel Without a Cause" and the best place to see the Hollywood sign.

It was a little hazy. You can see the sign way off.

James Dean Griffith Observatory

To the side of the observatory there was a bust of James Dean.

Griffith Observatory James Dean
It said: This is not a monument to a rebel, those were only the roles he played. James Dean was an American Original who on a basis of high school honors and in a period of five years, time rose to the very pinnacle of the theatrical profession and through the magic of motion pictures lives on in legend.
Presented in 1988 by the artist Kenneth Kendall who sculpted it in 1955-1956 at the request of James Dean and dedicates it to his memory.

It ended with his body changed to light
A star that burns forever in that sky

Looking down the stairs on the side of the observatory.

Solar system Griffith observatory
A huge scale model of our solar system is in a field in Otford, England. The Sun is a sphere 12" across, the Earth is a sphere 1/10" across and the distance from the Earth to the Sun is 108 feet. At that scale, the nearest star to the Sun is the small sphere in Los Angeles, 5400 miles from Otford.
This Bronze ball represents Proxima Centauri, the nearest star to our Sun. It is a dwarf star about 1/10th the diameter of our Sun and 4-1/3 light year distance away. In this scale model 1" = 72,000 miles.
