Our traditional self portrait.

They had some really interesting animals. Ones I've never seen before.

This is Su Lin. Su Lin was the first live panda in the United States. Ruth Harkness captured Su Lin during her expedition and brought him to the U.S. to raise awareness of the threat that hunting posed to Pandas.

Su Lin arrived at the Brookfield Zoo February 19337 and died of pneumonia at about two years old. An autopsy revealed that Su Lin, thought to be a female, was really male. He was sent to the Field Museum for scientific study and, eventually, display.

During his life, Su Lin charmed the Brookfield Zoo visitor, and the entire country. He appeared frequently in the press, newsreels and on the radio.

I didn't really think about where the animals came from until I saw the babies. Lots of babies.
