The Spirit of America was the first of the modern jet-propelled record breaking cars. Craig Breedlove set his first record on September 5, 1963 at Bonneville, the first man to set an average speed of over 400 mph during a land speed record.

On May 10, 1893, Engine No. 999 broke the world speed record. No vehicle had ever reached 100 mph, but that morning No. 999 reached 112.5 mph! The engine hauled the New York Central Railroad’s newest passenger train, the Empire State Express. It broke the world record while passing through Crittenden, NY on it’s way to Buffalo, NY.
