Katakolon - P.88

Olympia Katakolon Greece

Leaving the stadium.

Heras Altar

Hera's altar. The lighting of the Olympic flame has taken place here since 1936. They use a parabolic mirror to focus the rays of the sun to light the torch.

We had a few minutes before we had to meet our tour group so we went back to the Temple of Zeus.

Bill! Those columns were HUGE! If you're wondering about those things around our necks, they're radios so we can hear our tour guide.

Writing!

We probably weren't supposed to be climbing around but we wanted to see if we could get up the stairs. It was blocked.

After we met our group we went inside to see a model of what Olympia used to look like.

Archaeological Museum Olympia

Next we headed to the Archaeological Museum of Olympia. They had the pediments from the Temple of Zeus. This is the West pediment which shows a battle between Lapiths and Centaurs, which took place at a wedding feast. The Centaurs had been invited to the wedding but drank too much wine and attempted to abduct the Lapith women. In the fight, Apollo stands calmly at the centre while Peirithoös, the Lapith king and bridegroom, leads the attack on the Centaurs.

Temple of Zeus Pediment

In case you were wondering, the pediment is the ends of the roof. You can tell how the shape of the sculptures would fit.
