Amalfi - P.20

14th century fresco of the Virgin Enthroned holding the Child.

Amalfi Cathedral Crypt

Now we entered the Crypt.

St. Andrew Amalfi

The crypt of St. Andrew. Jesus' First Apostle.

The ceiling was frescoed in 1660 with scenes from the Passion of the Christ.

St Andrew

The statue of St. Andrew is by Florentine artist Michaelangelo Naccherino (1604). The proportions resemble the sculpture "Moses" by his teacher Michelangelo. The statues behind him represent St. Lawrence and St. Stephen.

A marble of St. Andrew holding his crucifix next to Jesus.

If you look through the grate, this is where his bones are kept. The small crystal vial on top is used to collect the "Manna" which appears every year on the eve of his Saint's holiday. According to the literature, the Manna has appeared in Amalfi for 750 years.

It was much darker than it appears in the photos in the Crypt and it was very solemn.

The Cathedral.
