![]() All of the streets were so pretty. |
![]() You can see why they don't let everyone drive down the streets. |
![]() A pretty piazza with a fountain. |
![]() Sanctuary of the New Church, Parental home of Saint Francisco. |
![]() They were holding some kind of ceremony inside. |
![]() We didn't know what they were doing but a lot of them were wearing these robes. |
![]() Back down the street. You can see there are more people here than in Cortona. |
![]() It was getting dark and we were a little worried about finding our way back so we decided to start heading back to the hotel. |
![]() We had time to go back to the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. |
![]() The church was huge. It was almost to the scale of St. Peter's Basilica. |
![]() Inside, directly underneath the dome is The Porziuncola. The chiesetta (little church) is the most sacred place for Franciscans. It is considered a holy place. Francis was given this little church, dating from the 9th century, from Benedictine monks. Before his death, St. Francis himself pointed out the Portiuncola as a primary source of inspiration and a model for all his followers. |
![]() No pictures were allowed inside. We left Assisi to head back to the hotel. We got hopelessly lost, in the dark. We also didn't have a map that had Assisi on it. To get there, we just followed signs. It was only by pure luck that we saw a sign for Chiusi and made our way back. We missed dinner. The next day we looked at the map and we were in a completely different direction than we thought we were. If it hadn't been for the sign we might still be driving! |
