Heading down the marble road for lunch!

Our tour guide pointed out this wheel carved in to one of the marble blocks. It's a Christian symbol called an "Ichthys Wheel" or Wheel Cross. The symbol translates into English as "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour." If you spell that out in Greek and take the first letter in each word, (iota chi theta upsilon sigma) then lay each letter on top of each other, it will make this spoked wheel. It's the equivalent of a "Jesus Fish" today. A "Jesus Fish" is an ichthys, a way for Christians to identify themselves and each other.
