The Basilica was built by Justinian I in the 6th century.

It was modeled after the now lost Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople.

The floor plan of the church it was laid out in a Greek cross plattern.

"St. Jean in Mezari" is Turkish for "The Tomb of St. John."
