2013 Big Adventure

Lausanne - P.183

Laussane Palais de Rumine

The statue is just above the front door.

Notre Dame Switzerland

We were headed for the church.

The Cathedral of Notre Dame of Lausanne. You can see how huge the doors are. There's a man in the lower right corner.

A close up of the top of the door casing.

Walking around to the side.

Across the walkway was the Mudac art gallery. The bags were for the art installation, "Coup de sac." The installation is designed around the plastic shopping bag. The exhibition showed face different aspects of the plastic bag, from conceptual art, towards a more day-to-day approach, up to ecological matters. Those are plastic bags hanging on the building.

Since 1405 until the present day without interruption, the city of Lausanne has maintained a lookout in the Cathedral bell tower. The lookout announces the time by yelling the hour from 10 p.m. to 2 am 365 days a year. The lookout cries the hour to each cardinal direction "C'est le guet, il a sonné [dix]." The original purpose of the lookout was to provide a warning in case of fire but now it is a tradition. Since 2002, the official lookout is Renato Häusler.

We took a photo of every stained glass window in the church. I picked out just a few.

The church was absolutely beautiful!

A funny coincidence, the church was consecrated by Pope Gregory X, the same Pope we saw at the beginning of our vacation in Arezzo!
