Arezzo - P.8

Catedral di Arezzo

We didn't bust in on a wedding. The wedding was being held in a side chapel.

Cathedral of Arezzo

The wedding was in this chapel. It was behind the wrought iron wall. Very beautiful!

Looking down the side hallway. We could see something interesting down there.

The fresco to the right was painted by Piero de la Francesca before 1459. The Magdalene is portrayed according to the ancient iconography. Her long hair worn loose, while holding in her hand the container of ointments that she would then rub on Jesus' body in the Sepulchre.

Set in a classical-style Renaissance arch, embellished by an extremely elegant frieze, decorated with small palm trees, must have been portrayed on a blue background of which few traces remain, while the gold of the halo has fallen off.

We didn't quite know what this was. I translated part of this and it says, "Shrine Cathedral Founder Campaldino." There was a Battle of Campaldino in Arezzo so it must have something to do with that. It was a window in the floor.

We walked up to the front of the Cathedral and Pope Gregory X was in a glass case.

Pope Gregory X was born c. 1210 and was Pope from 1 September 1271 to his death in 1276. He was elected after the longest conclave in history. It ran from 1268 to 1271. The new Pope was caught by surprise by the election. He was with King Edward I in Palestine and not even a Cardinal at the time! Gregory X was beatified on 8 July 1713 by Pope Clement XI.

I can't read this well enough to get a translation. It's talking about Pope Gregory X and Bishop Guglielmino (William) Umbertini. The Bishop is also buried in the Cathedral.

The Arch of St. Donatus

This was behind the altar.
