2013 Big Adventure
Dubrovnik - P.118
Back on the bus! |
|
There was a lot of traffic going back in to Dubrovnik! |
Our tour was over. We had a couple of hours before we had to be back on the ship so we went in to the city. |
We entered through Gate of Pila. Over the gate there's a statue of city patron, Saint Blaise. |
During the republican era there was a wooden drawbridge to the Pila Gate which was hoisted each night with considerable pomp in a ceremony which delivered the city's keys to the Ragusan rector. Today, it's a dry moat with a garden. |
The Pila Gate. |
Once you're inside the gate there's 3 ways to get inside the city. |
We went this way. |
|
The Large Onofrios Fountain. Built from 1438 - 1440, it was one of the ending points of the aqueduct system. It supplied citizens with fresh water. |
You had to pay to walk on top of the wall. |
