Bern - P.199

Headed back to the car.

Bern Switzerland

On the way to Zurich we stopped off in Bern to see the clock.

Zytglogge

The Zytglogge tower was built in the early 13th century, it has served the city as guard tower, prison, clock tower, centre of urban life and civic memorial. It is one of Bern's most recognizable symbols and, with its 15th-century astronomical clock, a major tourist attraction. It is a heritage site of national significance, and part of the Old City of Bern, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.

You can see him more easily in this close-up picture but just sitting there next to the other bags it was hard to tell this was a street performer. He would follow people as they walked by and scare them.

The astronomical clock was so involved. It keeps track of the time, the day of the week, the moon phase. It's hard to explain how it does it all without a huge paragraph.

Chronos rings the bell.

There was a pretty good crowd there to watch it chime. It didn't do much when it chimed. We took video but just one thing on the side turned and then it rang. Not as active as we thought.

The Zähringen Fountain. Probably built in 1535 as a memorial to the founder of Bern, Berchtold von Zähringer.
