Cool armor.

Gruyeres castle

A Burgundian Cope (Cloak). It is part of the booty captured by the Confederates at the battle of Morat against Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, on June 22, 1476.

There were stained glass windows everywhere.

These wall paintings are inspired by Titus Livius' Roman history.

The come from the manor house of the Englishberg family in Uberstorf, about 1530.

There have been many legends swirling around this severed hand. The most popular was it was brought back from the Holy Land as a talisman. Another was that a soldier from Gruyeres had his hand ripped off in the battle of Burgundy. It was brought back as a souvenir of his victory. Another was that perhaps it was the hand of a thief caught stealing.

The truth is, in 2003, it was determined to be the hand of a mummy. In the middle ages mummies were thought to have beneficial effects. Around the time the families Bovy and Balland bought the castle and started to refurbish it is when stories like Brahm Stoker's Dracula were popular. While refurbishing the castle, the families set up a curiosities museum on the ground floor. The hand was probably in the museum.

The Bailiff's Room. The "wallpaper" was painted in 1685 - 1686.

The tour said they probably used this room as a big study.

It amazes me how old everything is. The angels and bronze andirons are from the 17th century. In between the angels is the family crest of the Python family.
