Lucerne - P.168

Lucerne Chapel bridge

This is called the Wasserturm or "water tower." It's not a water tower at all but it literally is a tower standing in water. The tower predates the bridge by about 30 years. It has been used as a prison, torture chamber, and later a municipal archive. Today, the tower is closed to the public, although it houses a local artillery association as well as a tourist gift shop.

Now we're finally walking through.

Like I said before, this is the oldest surviving truss bridge in the world. It consists of strutted and triangulated trusses supported on piled trestles. It is probably an evolution of the strutted bridge.

Some of the 17th century paintings that survived the fire.

And, sadly, you can still see some of the fire damage.
