Bernina Express- P.154

Tirano Bernina Express

Time to get on the train!

Bernina Express

We sat in the section with the panoramic windows!

Our car wasn't very crowded.

Bernina Express

The Bernina Express is not an express train. It's a sightseeing train. It goes from Tirano to Davos Platz and back. It takes about 4 hours. The rail line was declared a World Heritage Site in 2008 and crosses the Swiss Engadin Alps for most of the trip.

The trip includes 196 bridges, 55 tunnels and you cross the Bernina Pass at 2,253 meters above sea level. What we were most excited about were the spirals!

We were off!

Still not many people in our car but we were going to make a few stops.

In some places the train seemed like it had it's own lane of traffic.

Coming up to the Brusio spiral viaduct.

In order to go up steep slopes in a short amount of space so the train wouldn't slip on the way up or be in an uncontrollable slide on the way down, the engineers decided to build these spirals that have a 7-degree slope so the train could go up gradually.

Starting the spiral!
